Post-Trip Cleanup & Stowage Tips

How to Keep Your Boston Whaler Clean Between Trips

A great day on the water isn’t just about the ride—it’s about the prep, the adventure, and, yes, even the wrap-up. Taking care of your boat after every outing ensures it’s ready for action the next time you cast off. Whether your Whaler rests in a marina slip or on a trailer in your driveway, a little TLC post-trip goes a long way.

The Clean Sweep: Rinse, Scrub, and Shine

Leaving your boat spotless isn’t just for looks—it protects your investment and makes every launch feel like the first. Salt, dirt, and grime? Not on your watch.

  • Rinse thoroughly—hull, deck, pulleys, lockers, canvas enclosures, cushions—nothing gets left behind.
  • Zippers matter! Salt and dirt can seize them up, so clean them well.
  • Dry all surfaces—interior and exterior—to prevent mold and water spots, especially on canvas windows and stainless steel.
  • Floors need love too—wash away fish guts, sand, and debris.
  • Empty the bilge—a clean, dry bilge means a fresh-smelling boat.
  • Trash goes home—food scraps attract rodents and bad vibes.
  • Remove wet gear—life jackets, towels, water toys—let them dry properly.
  • Trailered boats: Pull those plugs and drain all water. Your future self will thank you.

Lock It Down & Keep It Secure

Docked at a marina? Parked at home? Wherever your Whaler rests, make sure it stays safe and sound.

For boats in a slip:

  • Double-check dock lines and fenders—secure that beauty against unexpected winds.
  • Lock all compartments and, if applicable, the cabin.
  • Power down electronics—don’t let a drained battery ruin your next trip.
  • Raise the outboard—keeping it out of the water extends its life.
  • Stow exterior cushions inside if possible.
  • Button up enclosures but allow ventilation to prevent mildew.

For trailered boats:

  • Lock compartments to deter curious hands.
  • Cover up—protect against sun, rain, and feathery intruders.
  • Flush the engines if storing for a while, especially after saltwater use.
  • Ensure ventilation under the cover to prevent mildew.
  • Check tire pressure and trailer lights before your next move.
  • Use a security device—tire boot, tongue lock—so it stays where you parked it.

What Not to Leave Behind

Some things belong on the boat. Others? Not so much.

  • No trash or perishables—for obvious reasons.
  • Valuables stay with you—wakeboards, high-end fishing gear, removable electronics.
  • Flammables? Acetone, certain cleaning products—store them elsewhere, like a dock box.

Leave It Like You Want to Find It

Salt-free, clean, dry, covered, locked—that’s the goal. Because the way you leave your Whaler is the way you’ll find it when it’s time for the next great adventure. So, take a few extra minutes, stow it right, and make sure there are no delays getting off the dock the next time you head out.
