How WhalerStep™ Stepped Hull Technology Advances Offshore Performance and Capability

At Boston Whaler, our reputation has always been earned the same way: by engineering boats that perform predictably, safely, and confidently when it matters most. We don’t chase innovation for its own sake. Every advancement we introduce must prove its value on the water, over time, and in real boating conditions.

That philosophy led to WhalerStep™—our latest hull innovation, introduced in 2026 on the all‑new 330 Outrage. WhalerStep represents a meaningful evolution in how we think about performance, efficiency, and control, while remaining true to the characteristics that have defined Boston Whaler for decades. Here’s the story about how we engineered progress without compromising the integrity of the ride that Whaler owners trust.

An Icon That Demands Purposeful Evolution

For more than 50 years, Outrage models have set the benchmark for offshore-capable family fishing boats. From early designs in the 1970s to today’s modern platforms, Outrage has always reflected what matters most to our customers: strength, stability, and confidence when pushing beyond familiar waters.

From the outset, our teams went back to the very beginning of Outrage, studying what made it endure over five decades before determining how it should evolve next. We needed to honor the legacy of Outrage while advancing its offshore performance in a way that felt authentic and deliberate, not experimental. That’s because when we challenge ourselves to find opportunities for advancement, we start by considering whether our boaters need or want a new feature in the first place.

That standard shaped every decision that followed.

Engineering the Step—the Whaler Way

Stepped hulls are not new to boating. In extensive voice of customer research, ride quality and fuel efficiency consistently ranked as the top priorities among offshore boaters. We knew a stepped hull would give us a way to improve both as long as we could engineer them to meet our standards.

Stepped hulls work fundamentally by drying the bottom of the boat. There’s less water in contact with the running surface, and that reduces resistance that can push a vessel to its limits when swells stack up. What proved challenging (and where many hull design iterations fell short) was achieving the efficiency benefits of a step while preserving lateral stability and predictable handling in choppy conditions.

Our engineers spent nearly 10 years studying hydrodynamics, running simulations, building test hulls, and refining geometry to solve that problem. What resulted was a patented TStep design that manages airflow and water release to support higher efficiency offshore, and engineered to work in concert with our signature Unibond® construction, which delivers the unsinkability and trust expected of every Boston Whaler.

By reducing the amount of hull surface in contact with the water, WhalerStep lowers resistance and improves efficiency without sacrificing control. Depending on the model, WhalerStep can deliver up to a 20% increase in fuel economy, without introducing the handling compromises often associated with stepped hulls.

Why the 330 Outrage Was the Right Introduction

When WhalerStep was ready, the question wasn’t whether to use it, but where it would deliver the most value.

The 330 Outrage sits at an ideal intersection of offshore capability and everyday versatility. Owners rely on it for long offshore runs, changing sea states, family cruising, and entertaining. That balance between serious offshore fishing capability and comfort for everyone aboard has always defined the series, and it's what makes efficiency, ride comfort, and driver confidence especially important.

On the new 330 Outrage, WhalerStep enhances what this boat model already does well:

  • Improves efficiency across a range of speeds and conditions
  • Delivers confident, predictable handling that remains intuitive at the helm
  • Contributes to a smoother, drier ride offshore

Rather than changing the personality of the boat, WhalerStep makes it even more distinct.

Precision You Feel at the Helm

Feedback from early testing was consistent. The boat feels controlled, planted and precise, especially through turns and in challenging water. Through extensive on water testing, our teams consistently described the experience as feeling “on rails,” a reflection of how balanced and composed the hull remains as speed and conditions change.

While performance metrics help tell part of the story, what matters most is how the boat behaves on a long run or when passengers are moving freely on board. The reduced resistance allows the boat to work with the water rather than fight it, which means less fatigue at the helm and a more relaxed experience for everyone aboard.

Supporting Performance Without Compromising Safety

Introducing WhalerStep required meaningful adjustments across the manufacturing process. Complex hull geometry demands precise control of foam expansion, laminate placement, and structural reinforcement, especially when introducing stepped geometry. Every aspect was validated to ensure the hull performs as intended without sacrificing safety or longevity.

That level of rigor is fundamental to how every Boston Whaler is built. Across our lineup, the philosophy remains consistent: engineer for real conditions, test beyond expectations and design for long‑term ownership, not short‑term gimmicks.

Built for Enduring Value

Our premium reputation isn’t created by adding features. It’s built through disciplined engineering, consistent execution, and a refusal to compromise when things get complex. WhalerStep makes that philosophy visible. It’s not a trend or a marketing feature but a foundational improvement that reflects our long standing dedication to doing things the right way even when it takes longer.

On a model as important as the 330 Outrage, it demonstrates how thoughtful innovation can coexist with proven construction methods. The boat blends classic Whaler proportions with modern performance, ensuring it looks relevant and performs confidently today and for years to come.

It’s a testament to why Boston Whalers command their value: because they’re engineered to deliver more capability, more confidence, more durability, and more peace of mind, wherever the water takes you.

What Is WhalerStep™?

WhalerStep™ is a stepped hull design developed by Boston Whaler to improve fuel efficiency, ride quality, and control—without sacrificing the brand’s signature stability and safety.

A stepped hull uses engineered air channels to reduce drag by lifting part of the hull out of the water, improving efficiency and performance.

How Does a Stepped Hull Work?

A stepped hull introduces one or more “steps” (indentations) along the bottom of the boat.

These steps:

  • Pull air under the hull
  • Reduce how much surface stays in contact with the water
  • Decrease drag (resistance)
  • Allow the boat to run more efficiently at speed

Less water contact = less drag = better fuel efficiency and smoother performance.

What Makes WhalerStep™ Different?

Not all stepped hulls boats have the same. Some improve speed and efficiency—but at the cost of stability, especially in rough water.

WhalerStep™ was designed to solve that tradeoff.

Key differences:

  • Uses a patented TStep design to control airflow under the hull
  • Maintains lateral stability in choppy conditions
  • Works with Unibond® construction for structural integrity
  • Engineered over nearly 10 years of testing and refinement

WhalerStep improves efficiency like a traditional stepped hull, but is engineered to maintain predictable handling and stability in offshore conditions.

What Are the Benefits of WhalerStep™?

1. Improved Fuel Efficiency

  • Reduces drag by minimizing water contact
  • Can deliver up to ~20% better fuel economy (model dependent)

2. Smoother Ride Offshore

  • Helps the hull move more efficiently through the water
  • Reduces resistance in varying sea conditions

3. Better Control and Handling

  • Designed to feel stable and “planted” at speed
  • Maintains predictable handling in turns and rough water

4. Reduced Driver Fatigue

  • Less resistance = less constant correction at the helm
  • More relaxed experience on long runs

Why Was It Introduced on the 330 Outrage?

The 330 Outrage sits in a high-demand performance category—where efficiency, range, and comfort all matter.

It’s used for:

  • Offshore fishing runs
  • Long-distance cruising
  • Family boating in changing conditions

The 330 Outrage was the ideal platform because it benefits directly from improved efficiency, ride comfort, and driver confidence.

Does a Stepped Hull Affect Stability?

Short answer:

Yes—on some boats. But WhalerStep™ was engineered specifically to avoid that issue.

Traditional stepped hulls can reduce stability if not properly designed. WhalerStep uses controlled airflow and hull geometry to maintain balance, predictability, and control in rough water.

Is WhalerStep™ Better Than a Traditional Hull?

It depends on the execution—not just the concept.
